WHAT IS NIOBIUM?

Niobium is a metal with atomic number 41, belongs to the d-block, period 5 of the periodic table. It is denoted as ‘Nb’. It is white in colour and gets a tinge of light blue after prolonged exposure to air at room temperatures. It is ductile and has many similarities in physical and chemical properties with the metal Tantalum. The main ores of Niobium are Columbite, Samarskite and Betafite and they are generally found in Brazil, Russia, Nigeria and Canada.

At cryogenic temperatures, Niobium acts as a superconductor. It demonstrates the largest magnetic penetration depth of any element. It is also one of the three elemental Type II superconductors, along with vanadium and technetium. Niobium does not have much resistance to oxidation in air when subjected to high temperatures and thus in order to use the metal under high temperatures, it has to be provided a protective environment to minimize oxidation. It is also reactive to carbon, nitrogen, sulfur and halogens. Niobium is non-reactive to acids and moisture at room temperatures but reacts with acids at elevated temperatures.
